Stockade Association Recognizes The Canal Corporation Efforts To Prevent Ice Jams On The Mohawk
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MARCH 14, 2022
On March 17, 2022 at 7 p.m. at the Stockade Inn, the Stockade Association will recognize the Canal Corporation and the crew of the Tugboat Margot for the work done this spring to avoid the build up of ice jams along the Mohawk River. Dr. John Garver, Professor of Geology at Union College reported that the work of the Tugboat Margot, breaking up the ice along the Schenectady Pool, played a key role in preventing the build up of ice jams this year. Ice jams can cause flooding along the river, especially in the Stockade Historic District.
“As a grateful neighborhood, we want to thank the team that is working to prevent flooding in this significant historic district,” said Suzanne Unger, President of the Stockade Association. “We understand this is a pilot project and there are many other variables that the Canal Corporation and New York State Power Authority must consider when looking at ways to prevent flooding. However, it was very reassuring to see the Margot out on the river all winter, churning up the ice.” she continued.
Those being recognized are: Brian U. Stratton, Director, the Canal Corporation, Chris Deeley, Captain of the Tug Margot which is owned by NY State Marine Highway Transportation Company, Mike Kahler, Port Engineer and John Agostinello, Deckhand. The ceremony will take place at the beginning of the Association’s March general meeting and the first in-person meeting since January 2020.
